Egypt Cartoons- Will Troppe

Egypt Cartoon

Egypt Cartoon

For this exchange, students from Stanford and the American University in Cairo posted and commented on each other’s analyses of political cartoons and advertisements.

This cartoon would be funny for Egyptian audiences depending on their thoughts about Egypt’s past. It doesn’t require any knowledge about Egypt’s government or about the US’s government. The only knowledge required to get the joke is the knowledge of the use of that body position in Ancient Egyptian art.

Stanford Cartoon

I think this cartoon is appropriate for Stanford students because it includes several pertinent themes. I think many Stanford students can relate to the dating problems present in the cartoon. Additionally, many Stanford students study the hard sciences or Engineering, and Stephen Hawking was a physicist. The cartoon strip, xkcd, is catered to American audiences.
