Egyptian Cartoon- Emma Makoba

For this exchange, students from Stanford and the American University in Cairo posted and commented on each other’s analyses of political cartoons and advertisements.

This exact cartoon appeared in the popular Egyptian newspaper, Al Ahram. It scrutinizes Israel’s relationship with, and power over, the Obama administration. I thought this cartoon would be appreciated by Egyptian college students likely because it uses self-depricating humor and it paints United States’ foreign policy in a negative light.

I thought this cartoon would be very applicable to Stanford students. Firstly, it deals exclusively with college and specifically expensive university tuitions such as Stanford’s. Struggling to pay for college is something that many, but not all, Stanford student’s face. This cartoon is effective in making this message more palatable to its audience through humor.
